Environmental Assessment Addendum - Articulated Bus Garage Facility

In April 2008, the City of Ottawa completed its Environmental Assessment (EA) Study for its proposed OC Transpo Articulated Bus Garage Facility (also known as Industrial Bus Garage, IBG).

The EA study recommended that a facility storing 150 articulated buses with a capacity to service 192 articulated buses, administrative/dispatch building, an outdoor bus storage area, a maintenance building with an indoor bus storage area be located at 745 - 755 Industrial Avenue in the City of Ottawa.  Since the completion of the EA study, OC Transpo has proposed to expand the exterior bus parking area, including electrical infrastructure, to store an additional 80 buses and provide an expanded service capacity to 252 buses, comprised of 212 buses ready to be dispatched for street service and up to 40 buses in the garage waiting for maintenance.

Environmental Assessment Addendum

In accordance with the Municipal Engineers Association’s Class EA document (2000, as amended in 2007), an EA Addendum is needed to update the previously approved Environmental Study Report. The EA addendum will document the additional mitigation proposed to address the impacts as a result of the proposed changes to the undertaking.

The difference in the number of buses stored in the bus garage facility is detailed as follows:

EA (Completed April 2008)

  • Storage of 132 buses outdoors
  • Storage of 18 buses in the maintenance garage
  • Total storage of 150 buses on site
  • Overall capacity of bus garage facility up to 192 buses

EA Addendum (In Progress)

  • Storage of 212 buses outdoors (132 buses previously approved + 80 additional buses proposed)
  • Storage of 40 buses in the maintenance garage (18 buses previously approved + 22 additional buses proposed)
  • Overall capacity of bus garage facility up to 252 buses

It is noted that the previous references to the additional 80 buses to the site refer to the proposed new outdoor storage facility only. The proposed change will increase the overall capacity of the bus garage facility by 60 buses from the previously approved EA study.
