Why do elevators break down?

There are several reasons for this. Some elevators are used more often than others, this can cause wear and tear and increases the odds of them breaking down. Some elevators are older and are more prone to breaking down than the newer ones. Vandalism can also cause elevator service disruptions.

What is being done to ensure elevators are working?

A daily elevator inspection is performed by OC Transpo staff to ensure any malfunction is reported to Regional Elevator as soon as possible for the quickest turn around possible. A lifecycle program to replace aging elevators exists, to replace older elevators that break down with new ones.

How do I know how long an elevator will be out of service?

Depending on the severity of the issue, the availability of required parts or components and the age of some elevators, it may take a little longer in some cases for elevators to be repaired. An estimated date of repair is posted on the OC Transpo’s regular and mobile website and through Twitter feeds.

Customers can also register for elevator status alerts, to receive an e-mail or text whenever an elevator is out of service or back in service. To register for alerts go to octranspo1.com/alert-registration.

Can I get notified when an elevator is out of service or back in service?
