FAQ’s - v2.0

What features are available on MyTransit - OC Transpo?

OC Transpo’s mobile app offers a variety of features including Map (GPS), Favourites, Live Updates, Routes, and information about Fares.

Do I need a data plan to use this app?

While having a data plan is not essential to using the app, it is preferred. Users without a data plan can use the app by connecting to a Wi-Fi network. Since the app provides the most benefit for users on the go, a data plan is recommended.

How do I use the Map function?

The Map screen will help you find a stop or route nearest your current location using GPS data. The results can be viewed on an interactive, easy to use map. Pan and zoom to see stops all across the city of Ottawa.

How do I use the Routes function?

The Routes screen allows you to search by route name or number. Select a specific route, and view all the stops in order on the Trip screen. Change the direction of the route by clicking on “Direction” in the top right corner. Tap on a specific stop to view GPS-updated arrival times.

How do I Favourite a route and stop?

Add a route and stop combination to your Favourites in two ways. On the Map screen of the app, click on the star next to the route you want to Favourite. The star turns yellow once it has been successfully added to your Favourites.

You can also add to your Favourites via the Routes screen. Select a route and the Trip screen will open, showing you all the stops on that route. Tap a stop to see the next arrival times for your route, and choose your Favourite by tapping on the star.

Once you have added a route and stop combination to your Favourites, view the arrival times instantly on the Favourites screen.

Can I remove routes and/or stops from my Favourites?

To remove routes and/or stops from your Favourites, click the "Edit" button in the top right hand corner of the screen, and then select the red circle icon next to the item you wish to remove. When you have removed all of the desired routes and/or stops from your Favourites, select "Done".

You can also remove a Favourite by tapping on the yellow Favourites star when in the Map or Routes screens. The star will turn grey once it has been removed from your Favourites.

How can I submit feedback for this app?

On the Info screen of the mobile app, you will find a Feedback tab that will open onto an email feedback form. We look forward to receiving your comments!

How do I change the language of the app?

To change the language of your app, you will need to change your iPhone settings. From your iPhone home screen, select Settings>General>International> and then select the desired language. Remember, the app is only available in English and French.

What is the difference between this app and other local transit-related apps I have seen?

MyTransit is the official OC Transpo mobile app. It is the first transit app in Canada to incorporate live data. Other apps use scheduled or static data only, have been created by external developers and are not associated with OC Transpo. We do not provide support for these apps and cannot guarantee their accuracy and performance.

How do I use the Near Me function?

The Near Me function will help you find a stop or route nearest your current location using GPS data. The results can be viewed on an interactive, easy to use map or in list form. To switch back and forth between the map and the list, select the list button in the top right hand corner.

How do I use the Search function?

The Search function allows you to search both Stops and Routes. If you are searching for a stop near an intersection, type in the street followed by a space and then the cross street. For example, if you were interested in finding a stop near Bank and Slater, you would search "Bank Slater". Users can also search by route or stop numbers by simply entering the appropriate number.

How do I Favourite a route and/or stop?

Once you have a route or stop selected in the Search screen of the app, click the "Add to Favourites" button in the bottom left hand corner. Favourite live updates for your route by selecting the "View Route Updates" button from the bottom right hand corner.

Personalize your app by clicking on the "Edit" button in the top right of the More screen. Drag the icons for features you use most to the dock and release. For more detailed instructions on how to customize the dock, visit the "How To Edit" tab in the "More" section of the app.

How can I submit feedback for this app?

On the More screen of the mobile app, you will find a Feedback tab that will open onto an email feedback form. We look forward to receiving your comments!

How real-time is "real-time"? Is the data updated continuously or is there some sort of delay?

Under normal operation, the GPS data is sent from the buses to the server every 30 seconds using cellular technology. The cellular technology may present gaps in connectivity as vehicles move. It is OC Transpo’s experience, based on more than ten years of GPS usage, that about 5% of the time - due to a multitude of reasons such as equipment defects, latency and network coverage - we don’t have the exact position of the buses. Although reasonable efforts have been made in providing this service, we cannot guarantee the data feed’s accuracy or completeness. The City of Ottawa and OC Transpo cannot be held liable for any issues stemming from the use of the MyTransit - OC Transpo app.

Does the app need any modifications?

The app development process is an iterative one. With this first release, version 1.0, we are relying on transit riders to provide feedback and suggestions that will inevitably result in changes or improvements in future releases. For example, we are currently working on an update to refine the search function of the app around the way information is provided at Transitway stations. Currently the app searches for all buses at a station. If the bus does not serve the specific stop requested by a user, the app will display the message “No buses are scheduled at this time” (in French, “Aucun bus prévu pour l’instant”). Another function that is being refined is the Search screen, where stops for individual bus routes are being displayed in random order. These two features will be adjusted in version 1.1; users will receive direct notification of its availability on their iPhone in approximately two weeks. OC Transpo will also be adding additional features to the app in the coming months to include Travel Planning and Push Notifications (alerts). App users can provide feedback about the app through the feedback tab on the More screen.
