Ride and Skate
Alternative Transportation!
Do you live in Ottawa and work downtown? Why not combine business and pleasure, so to speak? Start off to work on the O-Train and finish the trip on skates!
First, take the light rail O-Train to Carling Station. From there, walk to the Rideau Canal Skateway (400 metres), put on your skates and enjoy an invigorating skate to work!
To help plan your route, check out the map of the Rideau Canal Skateway (PDF). It’s a great way to get some exercise, be eco-friendly and have fun!
NOTE: The Rideau Canal skate season typically runs from January to late February. The Skateway may not be open at all times during the winter months, so please check the Rideau Canal Skatway Ice Conditions.

Ice Skate Safety
For safety reasons, please note that you cannot wear your ice skates on the O-Train or bus. To help avoid injuries when riding transit, please use a skate bag; skate guards or carry your skates with the blades at your side.
Plan your ‘Ride and Skate’ using the Travel Planners:
Quick Planner: Type in your origin address and then for the destination, type in a Skateway entrance such as (for example) ‘Dows Lake’ or ‘Bank Skateway Entrance’.
Advanced Planner: Under the “Landmarks” tab, choose the “Rideau Canal Skateway” category from the drop-down list. Skateway entrance locations such as ‘Dows Lake’ or ‘Pretoria Skateway Entrance’ are listed there.
