Take the Safe Route
Your safety and peace of mind are among our top priorities. As one of North America's safest transit systems, we're committed to making your transit experience safe and enjoyable.
Over 300,000 transit trips are made each day and we want each trip to be a safe one. But there are times, like at night, when you can feel insecure and situations, such as slippery sidewalks, that can pose a hazard. By taking precautions and working together, we can reduce risks and improve safety.
Employees are trained to deal with many situations. We're out there around the clock with as many as 800 vehicles on the road during rush hour. We can help out on the spot using our vehicles as a safe haven for anyone in distress, or contact our Control Centre via two-way radios for further assistance.
The Control Centre handles an average of three Transecure calls a day and works in cooperation with emergency services such as fire, ambulance and police. From medical emergencies to accidents, fires, robberies and persons in distress - we're ready and able to help.
Remember, if you're in trouble or need help, ask any OC Transpo employee - you don't have to be a bus rider. If you're a parent, be sure to tell your children about Transecure.
If you use certain Transitway Stations after 9 pm, instead of waiting at your regular stop, you should wait at the designated Night Stop which is centrally located and close to the yellow emergency phones and pay phones.
As part of our commitment to a safe transit environment, we have Transit Law Enforcement Officers. You may not always see them, because some are plainclothes.
Safety and Security Initiatives
We have developed a liaison program with schools and students that focuses on communication and prevention.
In the Walk & Ride Program, Transit Special Constables walk about stations and ride buses and the O-Train so that they're accessible to customers and provide a visible security presence. Officers are also assigned to stations at specific times to act as a deterrent and provide stronger security and a quicker response.
